Department of Mathematics and Statistics
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Oakland University actively supports the OU Pledge by providing students with a range of hands-on learning opportunities. Students engage in undergraduate research projects, working with faculty on topics spanning applied mathematics to statistical modeling. Some of our students also participate in internships with leading companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Willis Towers Watson, and others. US Citizens who continue on in our graduate programs have internships in government agencies like the National Security Agency, where they apply their mathematical knowledge in real-world settings, further developing their practical skills. Additionally, students who are strong in math and love teaching and mentoring have the opportunity to work with middle and high school students on campus by being a "College Instructor" in the Oakland University Math Corps Summer Camp. Similarly, students have the opportunity to be a tutor on campus at the Academic Success Center (ASC), a Supplemental Instructor for our courses (hired by the ASC), and they can also be a Froemke Intern (co-hired with the ASC) to work with both the Department and the ASC. Additionally, students earning a math degree who are pursuing secondary school teaching certification from the School of Education and Human Services complete the requirement of teaching at local high schools, enabling them to apply their mathematical expertise in the classroom while gaining valuable teaching experience. Through these initiatives, the department creates a dynamic learning environment that equips students to make meaningful contributions in their chosen fields.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Oakland University provides students opportunities to develop mathematical and statistical skills needed for a vast array of math careers today. As one of the largest departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses in the following areas of study:
- Mathematics (MTH courses)
- Applied mathematics (APM courses)
- Operations research (MOR courses)
- Applied statistics (STA courses)
- Elementary education (MTE courses)
The department offers programs leading to undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. degrees in all phases of the pure and applied mathematical sciences.
Undergraduate programs include:
- Bachelor of Arts in mathematics
- Bachelor of Science in mathematics
- Bachelor of Science in applied statistics
See the Major-Minor Flyer.
The B.A. or B.S. in mathematics can be coupled with secondary teaching certification through the Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP). In addition, in cooperation with the Department of Economics, we offer a program leading to a Bachelor of Science in actuarial science.
At the master's level, we offer a variety of programs:
- Master of Arts in Mathematics
- Master of Science in Industrial Applied Mathematics
- Master of Science in Applied Statistics
- Graduate Certificate in Statistical Methods
At the Ph.D. level, the department offers a Doctor of Philosophy in applied mathematical sciences with one of the following associated specializations:
- Applied continuous mathematics
- Applied discrete mathematics
- Applied statistics
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics serves a support role for departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Computer Science, the School of Education and Human Services, and the School of Business Administration.
Join the Mathematics Student Society, a group of OU students who are interested in mathematics with a mission to bring students together to hear educational talks, form study groups, and learn about careers in math.
